Instead, look for natural fragrances.īeing a mother has added so much value to my life. With minimal studies done on them, as a mother, I would not expose my child to so much without knowing what is in it. Products with artificial fragrances contain thousands of ingredients that aren't even mentioned on the box. The final product to throw away is anything that contains artificial fragrances. Instead of salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, actives like lactic acid or erythromycin (when prescribed by a dermatologist) are safer choices. This perennial anti-bacterial, anti-zit agent is just not safe to use when one is expecting. Although a fave for acne, when you are pregnant, it's best to stay away. It also has some mild collagen-boosting effects. Although topical retinols have not been shown to be dangerous, as we all know, oral retinoids can cause birth defects. Some ingredients to absolutely avoid until you are done with your pregnancy and most breastfeeding: any form of retinol-be it Accutane, to even retinol serums. It is great to do during pregnancy, and even post-pregnancy! I felt that gave my skin that little TLC it needed, especially considering how dry it was. I loved massaging my skin with a little cocoa butter or just Pond's Cold Cream for 5-10 minutes, then washing it off. As pregnancy progresses, it seems like your skin changes by the day, so working with your skin is vital. Watching your pores become bigger and lines get worse during pregnancy is not fun, but heavy moisturisers containing ceramides are helpful, along with a rigorous mineral sunblock routine. Vitamin C or alpha-hydroxy acids become the go-to because they are ultra-gentle and don't cause any issues, should even a tiny amount be absorbed into the blood stream. Peels, ferulic acid and retinol get the boot. However, many pregnant women tend to get breakouts, irritated skin and rosacea flares. All my much-needed laser facials get thrown by the wayside, and the whole product regimen becomes unusable! When pregnant, many women believe that their skin gets better, clearer and glowy. Unfortunately, when you are pregnant, you can't continue these hard-core regimens. Having good skin ain't easy! I work to make my skin look clearer, younger and without pores and lines. For me, both ferulic acid (a potent antioxidant) and retinol (one of the strongest anti-ageing ingredients) are an absolute must. For protection against pollution, I wear Dr Dennis Gross' Ferulic and Retinol serum every day, which is also anti-ageing. To counteract dryness, I use a cleansing oil to wash my face and use heavy moisturisers like Cerave or ExOmega cream, or any cream with ceramides in them that is non-comedogenic. I also know that I am exposed to tonnes of pollution in Delhi, and recognise that this will make my skin age a little faster. For example, I have skin on the drier side, rosacea and a tendency to break out when stressed or when using the wrong products. I have skin issues that I have managed well through a specific skin care routine and treatments that luckily I can do for myself in-house. As a dermatologist, I'm pretty sure of what works for me and what doesn't.
